Art A- Level

Curriculum Intent

We endeavour to ensure all students gain the skills, knowledge and understanding required from the Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 curriculums, to develop and embed their learning of art, so they can fulfil their full potential to success.

The national curriculum for art and design at Key Stage 3 aims to ensure that all pupils: produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences, become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques, evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design, know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms. Students will continuously develop and refine their skills in the core areas for assessment at key stage 3.

They can then progress naturally through to GCSE which covers the core assessment objectives AO1- Develop, AO2 - Refine, AO3 - Record and AO4 - Present. They revisit their learning continuously and at specific key points to embed core skills, knowledge and understanding for improvement and progression, demonstrating increasingly independent lines of enquiry from experiences, second- and first-hand resources relevant to their practical intentions.

At A Level students develop their awareness of the refined four assessment objectives to be demonstrated in the context and skills presented. They learn the importance of process as well as product. They become competent in AO1-Develop, AO2-Explore and select, AO3-Record and AO4-Present.Students are introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of fine art media, processes and techniques. They are made aware of both traditional and new media.

This mapping creates knowledgeable, critical thinkers with securely embedded skills, becoming able to enhanced learners throughout the course of study from Key Stage 3 to 5 and beyond. Securing young artists with an informed view of the world of Art and its impact in/on society and Art history.
