Politics A-Level
Curriculum Intent
Politics is commonly known as a divisive and polarizing field of work. However, as an academic field it is rich with analysis, critique and knowledge production. Politics is a broad topic that encompasses the vast political structures, processes and institutions that determine the outcome of social, economic and historic events. The aim of the Politics course at Wixams Academy is to create articulate critical thinkers in a broad and balanced curriculum. Students will learn to scrutinize and defend political processes and structures in detail. Students will regularly discuss and debate topics which requires them to be informed and equipped with empirical evidence.
Students will understand the ideologies that underpin British politics: conservatism, socialism and liberalism. The optional ideology that students study is Nationalism, allowing them to further interrogate society from a different ideological perspective.
Students will have the opportunities to develop, articulate and defend their political opinions in a range of ways both verbal and written. Alongside this, they will be able to listen, understand and appreciate differing views of others. Importantly, they will be developing the ability to articulate political positions they disagree with. They will form the habit of asking critical questions that will deepen their understanding of politics. The Politics curriculum aims to produce politically aware, informed and engaged citizens who understand democracy, the British political process, and politics on a global scale.
